Chapter Ten

Axe

Cody sat at a table with Tanner, the two boys talking as they colored. Maybelle hadn’t stayed. I’d hoped she would, thinking Emma would like to meet her. Since she was new to town, she didn’t have friends. Of course, my club would be there for her, no matter what she needed.

“Is it just me or does she seem more… relaxed?” Henry asked.

“She is. Haskins told her about the town and us. Then he showed her a slight demonstration of his abilities.”

“Um.” Henry’s brow furrowed. “Maybe I’m wrong, but usually when humans find out about us, they freak the fuck out. Not act like… this.”

Emma laughed at something Isaac said. The way she smiled, the ease of her movements, all screamed that she was no longer anxious and scared. I’d been just as confused as Henry by her response. Until she’d explained. Even now, I felt I had a rather unique mate.

“She really likes paranormal romances.” I shrugged. “She said finding out she’s the mate of a wolf shifter was the best gift ever.”

“Huh.” Henry scratched the back of his head. “Well, all right. Seems weird to me, but whatever.”

“It feels a bit surreal,” I admitted. “I keep waiting for the typical reaction we see. How the hell did I get lucky enough to not only find my fated mate, but she’s also completely accepting of the fact shifters exist?”

“What about the kid?” Henry asked.

“We’ll have to tell him. I’m not sure how he’ll react. Then again, children tend to be more accepting than adults. Most of the ones I’ve met tend to shrug off any differences in people. It will probably help that I’ve already had a conversation with him twice now and helped get his mom away from the asshole beating on her.”

Henry grunted. “True enough.”

I moved closer to Cody and Tanner. The two didn’t seem to be speaking much. However, Cody wasn’t tense and seemed to be having a good time. I kneeled beside his chair and watched him color a picture of a wolf pack. Tanner’s page had bears on it. I wondered if someone had given them those pages on purpose, or if they’d chosen them.

“Cody, did you know Tanner goes to the same school you’ll be attending?” I asked.

“Yeah. He said he’s a year behind me.” Cody kept coloring without looking up. “He says everyone is nice and I won’t have trouble making friends.”

“He’s right. Besides, who wouldn’t like an awesome kid like you?” I asked.

Cody glanced my way and flashed me a smile. “Thanks, Axe. Can Tanner spend the night?”

I blinked at the abrupt shift in the conversation. I didn’t know how Emma would feel about it. Maybelle wouldn’t care, especially if Victor was staying at the clubhouse again. Although I didn’t think Josh would be getting out of jail anytime soon. It should be safe enough to take them to the house. But if Cody wanted Tanner to have a sleepover, probably would be better to do it here. At least until he’d had a chance to settle into his new home.
